Two arrested after breaking into Grand Junction Home

Mesa County, Colo -- A very frightened Grand Junction woman called 911 after two individuals entered her home unexpectedly. The caller, who was home with her her young son, was in her home watching television waiting for her husband to return. The caller heard the front door open and unexpectedly heard the family dog begin to growl. The caller looked toward the front door and saw an unknown man standing in her living room. The male stated he wanted "shelter or food."

The caller retreated to her bedroom  with her son and immediately called 911. The caller said they were going to attempt to leave the residence through a window but when the caller looked outside they saw a female acting as a lookout. The caller then locked themselves and their son in the bedroom closet waiting for law enforcement to arrive.

When law enforcement arrived they found Sergio Ramirez, 28, of Grand Junction, and Maricella Lozano, 29, of Grand Junction, in the residence. They were arrested and during a search, drug paraphernalia was found on Ramirez and drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine were found in Lozano's possession.

Ramirez was arrested on an outstanding warrant and charged with 2nd Degree Burglary and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. Lozano was arrested and charged with 2nd Degree Burglary,  Possession of a Schedule II Drug and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Both remain in custody at the Mesa County Detention Facility.

Shortly after the previous incident, deputies were dispatched to 540 29 Road, Grand Junction, after a 911 call was received from the residence stating an assault was occurring. When deputies arrived they contacted Shane Whittaker, 33, of Grand Junction, who refused to speak with them because he had an active Contempt of Court arrest warrant. Deputies then contacted the victim who said Whittaker had choked her and had threatened her while holding a large butcher knife toward her.

Whittaker was arrested and charged with Felony Menacing, Second Degree Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Assault in the 3rd Degree  and Contempt of Court.

It's Dangerous: Drivers Continue Driving Under The Influence Of Drugs And/Or Alcohol

Mesa County, Colo. -- It may be shocking to some people that law enforcement continues to regularly arrest people for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drug(s) -- DUI/DUID. The Colorado Department of Transportation reported crash statistics by County for 2015, from Colorado State Patrol crash investigations. Mesa County (CSP investigated) crashes attributed to alcohol in 2015, came in at 49. The same data reported crashes attributed to the driver being under the influence of drug(s), totaled 13.

For our agency, in 2015, we totaled 233 DUI/DUID arrests in Mesa County. Deputies located intoxicated drivers during regular patrol shifts and working increased DUI/DUID efforts, like holiday weekends (Heat Is On Campaign) in tangent with other local law enforcement agencies.

"DUI enforcement is one of the few proactive things you can do as a cop that truly saves lives," Captain Don Hendricks, said.

We laud all our deputies for their efforts to stop intoxicated drivers before they hurt innocent people or themselves. Our top deputies who took intoxicated drivers off the road in 2015 are: Deputy M. Roberts, Deputy B. Carnes, Deputy D. Strauch, Deputy J. Gray, Deputy B. Lawrence, Deputy D. Huisjen and Deputy D. Love.

Although several blood draws are still pending official results, here are our TOP 10 most notable blood alcohol content  (BAC) results for the year 2015, based on initial arrest information:

The Colorado legal limit for drunk driving is a BAC level of .08. A 120-pound female can reach this level of intoxication after only two drinks, and a 180-pound male can be at .08 after only four drinks. These numbers, however, are an average; Alcohol affects every person differently. One drink may be enough to push some people over the legal limit. A “drink” is considered to be either one 1.5-ounce shot of hard liquor, one 12-ounce glass of beer, or one 5-ounce glass of wine.

If you suspect an intoxicated driver on the roads in Colorado, you can call *277 from a cell phone or in Mesa County, call 911 or non-emergency dispatch at (970) 242-6707. And, some tips from Colorado State Patrol on spotting an intoxicated driver.

Reporting a suspected drunk driver to dispatch can and does save lives.

Two Californian's Booked On Meth Distribution Charges By Drug Task Force


Mesa County, Colo. -- Officers with the Grand Junction Police Department were called to a Horizon Drive hotel on Saturday morning, in Grand Junction, regarding possible drug use. Ultimately, the officers handed the two hotel rooms, two suspects and the room's contents over to investigators with the Western Colorado Drug Task Force.

Nicole Moraga, 33, and Hector Ramirez-Avila, 35, both of California, were arrested and booked into the Mesa County Detention Center on charges related to importing methamphetamine, distribution of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia. Investigators processed more than 3.5 ounces of suspected meth from the hotel rooms and a large amount of cash, as well, all consistent with distribution of drugs for profit.

The Western Colorado Drug Task Force is a partnership established in the early 1980’s between the U.S. Department of Justice Drug Enforcement Administration, the Grand Junction Police Department and the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office. The Task Force is designed to fight the battles of drugs on the front lines and other crimes that go with dealing and using drugs. Grand Junction Police Chief John Camper and Mesa County Sheriff Matt Lewis agree this Task Force is effective and nationally competitive in the law enforcement field when it comes to knowledge, experience and teamwork. Two Arrested on Multiple Charges

Mesa County, Colo --  For two months, Brandon Lofland and Miranda Clinton, both of Grand Junction, are suspected of traveled around the Western Slope and neighboring states writing checks they obtained during a residential burglary.

In mid November, the residence at 544 Greenwood Drive, Grand Junction, was broken into and unbeknownst to the residents a book of checks were stolen. The residents did not realize the checks had been taken until their bank notified them of several suspicious checks being cashed.

The residents contacted law enforcement on December 22, 2015 and reported the stolen checks and the suspected forgery.

The investigation showed that over the past two months, Lofland and Clinton had been travelling  throughout Mesa and Garfield Counties and in the state of Idaho forging multiple checks in excess of $3,000.00.

A no bond warrant was issued on January 8, 2016, for Lofland and Clinton for 2nd Degree Burglary, three counts of Theft, Conspiracy, Identity Theft, Criminal Possession of a Financial Transaction Device and Driving with License Cancelled/Denied.

Welfare Check By Deputies Ends With Wanted Suspect Arrested, Following Standoff With SWAT


Mesa County, Colo. -- Patrol deputies responded to 2915 Orchard Avenue, Grand Junction, just before 3 p.m. today, on a welfare check to an adult female and child inside an apartment in the complex. Dispatch had been notified of a possible domestic dispute erupting in the residence, but when deputies arrived on scene no one would answer the door.

Multiple attempts were made to contact the adults inside the residence, to include deputies hearing angry voices inside, and having other family members attempt to make contact with the adult female and male. Information continued to come in to deputies that the adults and a child, under the age of two, was inside the apartment.

Grand Junction Fire Department was on standby, in case
an immediate and emergent response was needed.




Eventually, the agency's Negotiation Team and SWAT Team were called to respond to the situation. Multiple apartments in the immediate area of the suspect's residence were evacuated for safety.

The suspect was identified as Pablo A. Chairez, Jr., 22, of Grand Junction, who had three outstanding warrants for his arrest related to prior domestic violence incidents. Just before 8 p.m., members of the agency's SWAT Team, along with the Grand Junction Police Department's SWAT Team, entered the residence, detaining and then arresting Chairez, and ensuring the adult female and child were safe.

Chairez will be booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on the outstanding warrants, and deputies will review the incident to determine if additional charges will be filed related to today's incident. Early Reports Of Small Aircraft Down, Glade Park Area

No Injuries Reported, One Pilot On-Board


UPDATE: The pilot has requested Search and Rescue stand down, as he will self rescue through friend/family coming to pick him up. Our deputy will continue to the location but other resources have been shut down for this mission as of 4:10 p.m.


Mesa County, Colo. -- A rural area deputy and Mesa County Search and Rescue have been dispatched to a remote area of Glade Park, west of Grand Junction, on a report of Cessna 150 aircraft crashed in a remote canyon. A single pilot was reported on-board and uninjured. The pilot has been in contact with our rural area deputy, who is still en-route to the scene. The deputy said, the pilot climbed up on a ridge to get cell phone service and will remain in place until rescued.

Initial information appeared the crash was possibly in Grand County, Utah, but more recent information suggests it is in Mesa County, Colorado. Although resources are being coordinated between jurisdictions. Information about where the aircraft originated or was headed, as well as information about the pilot, is not currently available.

Mesa County, Colo. -- School resource deputies investigated a middle school student this week for methamphetamine use, which ended with one adult being arrested for the second time in less than a year on methamphetamine related charges. Through the course of the investigation, Justine L. Murphy, 35, of Grand Junction, is suspected of providing the drug(s) to a teenager. She was arrested yesterday evening in the 900 block of Northern Way, Grand Junction, and booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on charges of:

  • Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor 
  • Unlawful Distribution of Controlled Substance (meth)
  • Unlawful Possession of Controlled Substance (meth) 
  • Violation of Bail Bonds
  • Unlawful Use of a Controlled Substance 
  • Child Abuse 

In addition, the teen, 15-year-old, KC Hatley, was arrested today on charges of  unlawful possession of controlled substance (meth), a class 4 felony, and unlawful use of a controlled substance ( a misdemeanor). KC is being booked into the Grand Mesa Youth Detention Facility.

Special Note: Under C.R.S. 19-1-304(1)(b.5) the public has access to information of juvenile arrests when charged with a class 1-4 felony. A booking photo will not be released of KC unless or until he is advised by a judge he is being charged as an adult.

Saturday Night Orchard Mesa, Wanted Fugitive Arrested By SWAT Team After Suspect Injured Deputy

Mesa County, Colo. -- Deputies attempted a traffic stop on a vehicle driven by wanted fugitive, Donald Quint, around 5 p.m., in the area of 29 and Patterson Roads, Grand Junction. Donald, 43, was wanted on a Grand Junction Police Department warrant for second degree assault and domestic violence related charges--stemming from a previous incident.

He fled from deputies after appearing initially to be compliant with the traffic stop, dragging and nearly running over a deputy during his escape in a vehicle he wasn't legally licensed to operate. The deputy sustained non-life threatening injuries to his knees and both arms, which were reviewed and treated by medical professionals at St. Mary's Hospital that night.

Deputies tracked the vehicle Donald was driving, finding it abandoned on Dawn Drive, in Grand Junction. Later deputies determined (through information from a family member of Donald's) he was inside a home at 2910 Jon Hall Road, in Orchard Mesa. Deputies made multiple attempts to contact him inside that residence, to include trying to talk him out of the home peacefully. He in no uncertain terms, declined.

Through the windows of the residence, deputies witnessed Donald in the kitchen obtaining knives and then appearing to barricade himself in the bathroom. When GJPD SWAT officers made entry into the bathroom trying to arrest Donald, he swung a shower curtain at them trying to strike them and assault them, several times.

Around 10:50 p.m., agency SWAT Team members and a Fruita Police Department officer with a K-9, made entry into the home locating Donald. He continued to be heavily combative and resistant with all deputies. He was arrested on the outstanding GJPD warrant and the following additional charges:

  • 2 counts, 2nd degree assault on a peace officer
  • 2 counts, Resisting arrest
  • Reckless driving
  • Reckless endangerment
  • Vehicular eluding
  • Driving under revocation
  • Failure to drive in a single lane

Separate Arrests Get Meth, Guns From Convicted Felons

Mesa County, Colo. -- Late last week, deputies located two wanted (with active warrants) adults in a camp trailer behind a residence in the 300 block of 30 Road, Grand Junction. They were arrested without incident and booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on their outstanding warrants and new charges related to the more than 20 grams of methamphetamine, drug paraphernalia and schedule II prescription drug(s), located inside the trailer.

Cody Guerrero, 31, and Leah Burrows, 30, both of Grand Junction remain in the Mesa County Jail on bond. Cody is being held on a $17,000 cash only bond, and Leah is being held on a $17,000 cash only bond with an added $600 cash or surety bond. They both are scheduled to appear in court next on January 22, at 8 a.m.

On Sunday morning, deputies were sent to a domestic violence incident where the male suspect was witnessed chasing a female with a baseball bat, in the 3200 block of E Road, in Clifton. In Larry's bedroom, deputies located 5 firearms and multiple rounds, along with suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Larry was previously convicted of felonies in 2005 and 2006, making it illegal for him to possess weapons.

Deputies also located an outstanding warrant for Larry Chambers, 33, of Clifton, who was also booked into jail on charges related to felony menacing, domestic violence, possession of weapons by a previous offender, possession of a dangerous or illegal weapon(s), third degree assault, failure to appear warrant and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Deputy Nearly Ran Over By Suspected Intoxicated Driver

Mesa County, Colo. -- A vehicle parked partially blocking the I-70 Business Loop near 32 Road, Clifton, yesterday around 5:20 p.m., caught the eye of a patrol deputy. Attempting to make contact with the driver of the vehicle, the deputy was nearly ran over, when the driver left the scene in a reckless manner. Moments later, deputies located the vehicle abandoned in a parking lot nearby and the driver was contacted walking in the area.

Jose Esparza-Treto, 38, of Grand Junction, was arrested for eluding and found to have 4 prior DUI convictions, while being suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol this evening. During the tow process of the vehicle he was driving, deputies located suspected methamphetamine.

Inmate Found Unresponsive

Unresponsive Male Found at Mesa County Detention Facility 


Mesa County, Colo -- This morning at 11:00 am, Mesa County Deputies working in the Detention Facility, found an unresponsive male hanging in his cell.  Life saving measures were immediately initiated by deputies and medical staff while the Grand Junction Fire Department was dispatched to the facility.  The male was transported to St. Mary's Hospital for treatment, where he is in critical condition.  

As with any incident of this type, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office Investigators are reviewing the circumstances of the event but no foul play is suspected.

Mesa County Sheriff's Office has reached out to the family of the male and our thoughts are with them during this tragic time.

MCSO Deputies Make Arrests After GJPD K-9 Alert

Mesa County, Colo. -- The excellent working relationship between the Mesa County Sheriff's Office and the Grand Junction Police Department was on display again this weekend. Working together on several contacts lead to the arrest of two individuals on drug charges. 

On Friday, January 22, Jason Selders, 39, of  Clifton, was contacted by deputies on a traffic stop. During the contact a Grand Junction Police Department Officer arrived to assist. The GJPD Officer's K-9 Joker, alerted on the car, indicating the presence of drugs.  

During the search of the car deputies found methamphetamine and a glass pipe. Selders was arrested and charged with Possession Schedule II Drug, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and traffic violations.

Michelle Kline, 47, of Loma, was contacted by deputies on a traffic stop for failing to drive in a single lane (weaving). A Grand Junction Police Department Officer assisted on the stop and their K-9 Joker, alerted on the car. 

During a search of the car, suspected methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia were found. Kline was arrested and transported to the Mesa County Detention Facility. Once at the facility additional methamphetamine was found in Kline's bra.     

Kline was booked on Possession of a Schedule II Drug, Introducing Contraband in the First Degree, Distribution 4 grams or less of a Schedule II Drug or 2 grams of Methamphetamine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and additional traffic violations.

New Scam Using Bogus Law Enforcement Officer

 Bogus Law Enforcement Officer Attempting to Scam Community

Mesa County, Colo. -- A new scam has hit Mesa County where law enforcement is being used to manipulate the community.   Recently, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office has received several reports from the community about being contacted by an individual identifying themselves as a local law enforcement officer.  The individual, who is identifying himself as "Officer Johnson" (but may be using multiple different names and police rank designations) is telling people that a family member has been arrested and a bond must be posted for them to get out.  The male suspect has requested the bond money be wired to an out of state location. He may also tell you there is a "gag order" on the case or that you are not allowed to contact any other law enforcement officer but him.  "Officer Johnson" has also provided a contact number of 1-888-316-9496.  Investigators are currently working on the case. 

Be aware! Law enforcement agencies would NOT contact you and request money to be wired to an out of state location to post a bond.  If you  receive a similar type call please report it to your local law enforcement agency.

Manufacturing "Hash Oil" Leads to Charges Against Clifton Man

Mesa County, Colo -- Manufacturing and using marijuana concentrate has become very popular over the past couple of years. Unfortunately, 36 year old Joseph Murray, of Clifton, found out manufacturing the concentrate in your home and in front of children is illegal. 

On February 1, 2016, Mesa County Deputies were dispatched to a disturbance at 3225 Rood Avenue, #4, for a report of a man at the residence yelling at children. Deputies contacted Murray who was providing care for three small children.  

While checking on the welfare of the children, deputies discovered evidence of the manufacturing of marijuana concentrate.  The concentrate, known by the street names of "Hash Oil", "BHO""Shatter""Wax", and "Dab", is a high concentrate of THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) which is extracted from plant material containing THC. The processes commonly used to do the extraction can be very dangerous and may cause explosions. 

After completing their investigation, deputies arrested Murray and charged him with Unlicensed Manufacture of Marijuana Concentrate Using Hazardous Substance and three counts of Child Abuse. Murray is currently being held at the Mesa County Detention Facility.

Impersonator Makes Traffic Stop

Law Enforcement Impersonator In the Grand Valley Area

Mesa County, Colo -- On February 3, 2016, at 12:40 am, the Mesa County Sheriff's Office received a report of an individual impersonating a law enforcement officer making a traffic stop near I-70 Business Loop and 31 1/2 Road.   
                 
The reporting person said a small black car, possibly a Dodge Dart with blacked out windows, attempted to drive past their car, then pulled behind them and displayed "police lights." The driver stopped and they along with their passenger were contacted by a white male (possibly with a beard), in his early 20s, approximately 6 feet tall with a stocky build.  The impersonator asked to see documentation and after a short conversation, he returned to his car and left. 

This contact was made by someone other than a law enforcement officer and this is the only report the Mesa County Sheriff's Office has received at this point.  

The community’s safety is paramount and this type of event is a rarity.  Agencies in the Grand Valley do utilize unmarked vehicles.  But, if you believe you are being contacted by someone who is not a law enforcement officer, there are steps you can take to protect yourself. 

- Call 911 and let them know who you are, where you are and ask if the person that is contacting you is a true law enforcement officer, or  
- If you are close to law enforcement agency, drive there, or
- Stop in a well-lit area with others around

Victor Green Investigation Completed

Mesa County, Colo -- Mesa County Sheriff's Office Investigators have completed their investigation into the events that led to the injuries of Victor Green, 30, of Fruita.  Green was found hanging in his single cell on January 23, 2016 at 11:00 am by Mesa County Sheriff's Office Detention Deputies and transported to the St. Mary's Hospital for treatment. 

Green has been an inmate at the Mesa County Detention Facility since January 2015. Green was booked into the facility after he was arrested by the Grand Junction Police Department for Criminal Attempt of First Degree Murder, 1st Degree Assault, 2nd Degree Assault and several other lesser charges.

On January 23, 2016, Green was housed alone in a single cell. During a routine cell check, deputies found an unresponsive Green hanging. The deputies immediately requested a nurse, an ambulance and began lifesaving measures. The Grand Junction Fire Department responded and transported Green to St. Mary's Hospital.

The investigation indicated the injuries suffered by Green were self-inflicted. Green remains at St. Mary's Hospital and is no longer in the custody of the Mesa County Sheriff's Office.

UPDATE: 02/05/16, 2:30 pm - Dustin Nunn, was booked into the Mesa County Detention Facility on additional charges after the standoff with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office and Grand Junction Police Department SWAT Teams yesterday.

The additional charges are Parole Violation, 2nd Degree Burglary, Possession of a Schedule II Drug, Criminal Mischief  $1000.00 to $5000.00, Resisting Arrest, Obstructing a Peace Officer, Violation of a Protection Order and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.

Nunn will remain at the Mesa County Detention Facility on a hold.

UPDATE: 02/05/16, 1:55 am - SWAT operation concluded. Dustin Nunn, 30, of Grand Junction taken into custody.

The Mesa County Sheriff's Office SWAT Team is currently conducting an operation at 2876 Orchard Avenue.  They are executing a search warrant in an attempt to arrest an individual who is wanted as a parole absconder and active warrants.

MESA COUNTY, COLORADO - At 11:06 am, deputies with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office were dispatched to the 500 Block of Fruitvale Court on a report of a suspicious male with a gun. The male was seen walking south, crossing I-70 Business Loop and the railroad tracks south of the roadway.  A description of the suspicious male was aired and Deputy Derek Geer contacted a male matching the description near E Road and 30 1/2 Road.

After a short interaction, in which Deputy Geer told the suspect he was being detained as part of the weapons investigation, the suspect attempted to flee.  Deputy Geer deployed his taser.  The suspect then fired several rounds at Deputy Geer, striking him multiple times.  The suspect then fled the scene on foot.

Other deputies, responding to the initial call, arrived and found Deputy Geer unresponsive.  At 11:17 am, the deputies notified dispatch of an "officer down." Deputy Geer was transported to St. Mary's Hospital with life threatening injuries where he remains at this time.  

Law enforcement officers from every agency on the valley responded to the area to assist in the search for the suspect.  At 12:04 pm, the suspect, a 17 year old white male, was taken into custody. Charges are pending.

The investigation into the incident has been turned over to the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team.

Deputy Geer is a Navy veteran and has been employed with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office since October 2001.  He is a husband and father of two children, 13 and 11.

UPDATE: Sheriff Lewis will be holding a press conference in the MCSO lobby at 6:30 pm.  The doors will open around 6:15 pm.  The press conference will be video recorded and later posted on our social media sites.

Shortly after 11:00 am, deputies with the Mesa County Sheriff's Office responded to the 500 Block of Fruitvale Court on a report of a man with a gun. Upon contact with the suspect, one deputy was shot. The deputy was transported to a local hospital for treatment of injuries. The suspect fled the scene, but was located and placed into custody. Area schools were placed into lock down but law enforcement and the school district are working together to release from lock down as soon as possible. Suspect in the Shooting of Deputy Derek Geer Identified

MESA COUNTY, COLO -- The 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) has released the identity of the suspect in the shooting of Mesa County Sheriff's Office Deputy Derek Geer on February 8, 2016.

Austin Patrick Holzer, age 17, of Grand Junction, Colorado, was located and taken into custody shortly after the assault, after initially fleeing the scene. Holzer has been charged with Attempted 2nd Degree Murder and Possession of a Weapon by a Previous Offender.

The formal investigation of this incident has been turned over to the Critical Incident Response Team. CIRT is currently seeking cooperation from the public in this investigation.
